Five questions to bring to an introductory coaching conversation
What to ask in a first conversation with a coach, why each question matters, and space to write your own priorities.
1. What experience is relevant to my situation?
You are looking for familiarity with the kind of decision or season in front of you, described in specifics. Notice whether the answer is about your situation or about the coach.
2. How do you work with a pastor to set goals?
Good coaching starts from goals you name and own. Ask how those goals are written down, how progress shows up, and what happens when the goals need to change.
3. How will we decide whether this is a fit?
A first conversation should leave both of you free to say no. A coach who welcomes that question is usually one you can be honest with later.
4. What information is shared with a sponsor?
If your board or church is paying, ask exactly what goes back to them, when, and with whose approval. Also ask the coach to explain the limits of confidentiality in plain terms.
5. How are scope, fees and review points agreed?
Clarity at the start protects the relationship. Ask how the arrangement is written down, how often it is reviewed, and how either side can pause or end it.
Your own priorities
Before the conversation, write down the one or two things you most want help thinking through. Bring them with you.
